Writing advice for teens
Hey there if your looking for awesome advice on writing a book as a teen your in the right place. I myself am a teen author and I have seen countless youtubers and bloggers give their own pieces of advice. A lot of it was good but also discouraging, here’s my best advice for all of you like me. Should you publish? Can you write a book, read on to find out my views on this topic.
Don’t follow advice that discourages you
There are so many people out there with really discouraging advice. Some put it in a nice way but it isn’t always nice. I can’t believe the number of times I’ve read advice which said that my writing sucked. They were not wrong. My writing wasn’t the best. But that didn’t mean that was the end of it. I wasn’t going to give up just because someone told me to. No one ever said don’t write, all they said was that your writing sucks and you cannot publish. But what they don’t get is that could discourage a lot of people. Don’t let it, these people haven’t actually read your work, they don’t know if it sucks. They say that if their advice makes you want to give up, you weren’t cut out for writing. But we should be all about encouraging and supporting each other not tearing each other down. so, the next time you see that piece of advice, remember that it isn’t true.
Be realistic
While it is very important to not get discouraged, its equally important to be real with yourself. Judge yourself properly. Don’t tell yourself your work is really bad when it might actually be good. You can’t be convinced you’re a genius or that you suck. Stay real, look at your book from the readers point of view. You will always be partial to your story just try to be less partial.
Write what you know
This is important advice for everyone but especially for teens. There’s so much to write about out there. There might be this one awesome topic everyone is talking about, you don’t have to write about that. That topic will soon fall out of fashion. You can’t be expected to write an epic romance if you haven’t experienced one. You don’t have to write a three hundred thousand word novel if your not comfortable with it. Your themes don’t have to be complicated and philosophical, they just have to be something you love and are passionate about.
Practice
Write a lot, write all the time. read books and figure out what you love and what your comfortable with. And then write about it. But you need practice. And with that practice your writing will be amazing. Write whenever you can. The key to having an awesome book is working on it a lot. Don’t give up on it when it seems to be coming along slowly or badly. Strengthen your story. With more practice you will also figure out your writing style, making things easier.
Prioritize
Remember what is important. Writing is super important to you but so is school its really very important that you don’t get behind on your school work and let your grades drop. The chances are really low that you make a living out of your writing right away. It’s definitely possible but it can’t be your only choice. Be realistic. So, don’t write when you have an exam the next day, you need to know when you can and can’t write. You may also have extracurriculars which you need to focus on. Write down everything you do in a day, even the time you spend on Netflix and social media. You will see these big blocks of time you are wasting. Use that time to write. You’ll get more done and feel good about yourself at the end of the day.
If you want to publish, go ahead
How many times have you heard people telling you not to publish.. They say that its too much to worry about. They have a point but this may not apply to you. I am currently writing my first novel and I want to publish. This isn’t keeping me from my schoolwork or anything. If this is something you can handle, do it. If like mine your parents too support this then you’ll have their support making it easier. If they don’t, sit them down and talk to them. Tell them why this is important to you. Convince them that this is something you really love. But at the same time if publishing feels overwhelming and unnecessary, don’t do it. There are so many apps like wattpad which make things really easy. By using wattpad people can read your story and its going to be much easier than actually publishing it. You can also start your own log and write your stories there.
Its not work
It could be harder to remember that its your hobby. Authortubers and authors tell you to treat writing like a job. But these are adults with actual jobs. You don’t have a job and writing is not your job. You don’t need to earn money, that’s the great thing about being a teen. You don’t have to do it. Even if you publish you don’t have to worry as much as adult authors.
